Berlin Winter Market

I’m going to jump a little out of sequence for a few posts so I can get to what’s most important at this time of year: Christmas markets!

When Neil and I were in Berlin, my cousin Johanna and her boyfriend Daniel came to visit. We were en route to a brewery when we came across our first Christmas market of the season, Winterwelt (Winter Festival) at Potsdamer Platz! (“Vinter Velt” as it would be pronounced in German).

Here we are getting our first round of gluhwein, aka mulled wine. (Pronounced gluh-vine).

Success! You can get gluhwein with different kinds of alcohol. The gluhwein with amaretto was our favourite.

This is where the magic happens.

There was a slide set up, as well as a carousel.

Some great pretzels.

And candy. Lots and lots of candy.

You’ll notice that the gingerbread cookies have made a post-Oktoberfest appearance.

“Ich liebe dich” translates to “I love you.”

Chocolate-covered strawberries. Delicious!

Chocolate-covered bananas.

Nuts to you.

Chocolate-covered apples.

My favourite booth, of course, was the one where you could pick out different star lamps.

The hardest part is deciding which star you want to buy! (Neil picked out the one in the middle for us).

It was the first weekend of November, so we were happy to enjoy our first holiday market. Most of them didn’t open until after we had moved onto Denmark and Sweden. So those are the next markets that I’ll cover!
